Geez ... I don't know *what* to think. I was expecting (hoping) that user and root would be using different builds of perl :-)

If it's the *same* build of perl and PDL, then the problem *has* to be related (in some way, at least) to permissions, doesn't it ?

I don't think I'll be able to help much - though I do wonder if this behaviour is limited to the perldl shell.

In other words, what happens if you run (as user):
perl -MPDL -e 'use PDL::Graphics::PGPLOT'
or simply:
perl -e 'use PDL::Graphics::PGPLOT'
