Thanks to Paul Goodall and Chris Marshall for their responses. I already had gfortran, though PDL seems not to find it. But the key was trying the command that was having permission problems:
/bin/sh: /usr/bin/podselect: Permission denied This revealed that podselect was not installed <blush>. I installed it and then was able to complete the installation and all seems to be working. Thanks again, jim
