Hey folks -
I've had an idea rolling around in my head for the past six months
or so that a once-a-month real-time VoiP gathering of PDLers would
be pretty cool. I would like to know if others would be interested
in something like this.
Basic benefits:
Develop a stronger community around PDL
Encourage people to start talking about PDL
Create alternative visual and audio documentation
Suggested format:
Use Ekiga or similar (aka Skypecasting)
Meet at a specified chat room at a specified time
Status update - an overview of what's happened in the last month
(basically a review of the git log and important discussions on the
list)
Talk - a how-to presentation that shows how to use some particular
feature of PDL
Open discussion - a chance for people to discuss anything PDL-related
From the standpoint of alternative documentation, the idea is that
the speaker would prepare a set of slides before we met. They could
send the slides (preferably OO.o or PDF) to the list, or publish
them on slideshare, so that participants could view the slides
during the talk. Afterwards, we could create a 'slidecast' (on
slidshare) so that in the future, people could watch the
presentation coupled with the audio of the talk. Not only would this
provide an alternative means for learning PDL, but it would put PDL
out on the web through an entirely new channel.
Talk topics could be any number of things, including
basic introduction to PDL
introduction to threading
using PLplot and PGPLOT
using OpenGL and TriD
using PDL::Stats
using <your favorite tool here>
switching to PDL from <your less-favorite alternative, i.e. Matlab>
using Git
using PDL::PP
low-hanging fruit, i.e. an overview of the TODO list
a tour of the Core
anything else Perl- or PDL-related
There would be many obstacles to getting this to work, including
finding presenters, agreeing on a time to meet, and agreeing on a
VoiP protocol, just to name a few. Let's stay away from those at the
moment and focus on these questions:
Would you be interested in attending such a monthly gathering?
Would you be interested in giving a talk?
Thanks.
David
