Personally, I think the idea of improving the documentation and user support for PDL is the key.
Unfortunately, I don't that that dispersing the PDL community across the internet would work well enough to offset to loss of focus. It is difficult enough to keep up as it is. :-) Maybe stackoverflow is the way of the future, maybe not.
