a few notes... When I first started installing, the install program warned me that I had PDL 2.4.6_011, and asked me to bail out. I did just that.
I removed PDL.pm and PDL/ from my perl5lib, and then ran Makefile.PL. I used my existing perldl.conf from 2.4.6_011 without any changes, so since I had all the dependencies installed already, it all worked. I did have to tinker with the PLplot Makefile, again, as noted in the install wiki notes. Oh, and I should really extend my thanks to all the developers. Chris Marshall just happens to be the lightning rod for the gratitude-for-the-doers-of-good-deeds.
