Indeed, the variability in the output devices for PLplot was one motivation
for my working on a new plotting library. However, you should be able to
easily view image files after they have been created, which is hopefully
good enough for now.

Please, please tell me that you've been taking detailed notes on your
struggles! Knowing where beginners stumble is crucial to updating the
install and basic docs!
