I've yet to test on 5.8.0 because I haven't worked out how to satisfy
dependencies there - I'll get back to that today.
What's our motivation for trying to keep 5.8.0 alive if 5.8.9 works?
5.8.9 is an easy update to 5.8.0 and doesn't require any module
rebuilds, since it's fully API-compatible.
Good question.
I finally got my dependency issues sorted out for 5.8.0, then fixed a
problem in Map.xs, and then discovered that PerlIO-Layers assumes a
version of PerlIO that's later than the version that shipped with the
5.8.0 source.
Since PerlIO is not dual-lived, that becomes pretty much a blocker.
That's the last time that *I* will be looking at PDL on perl-5.8.0.
From now on it will be versions of perl >= 5.8.9 only.
Maybe we should bump the minimum version to
5.8.9 (the last release of the 5.8.x series
that was marked "End of life" on 2008-12-24).
