Reverting to File::Map-0.52 did the trick and nothing else failed afterwards to derail the installation.
By following the solution proposed by Chris, I was experimenting in the interactive console within a few minutes... For the record it appears Sub::Exporter::Progressive installation predates my trials by a few months. It was had already there. Thanks to all for your replies.
