U.S. security will be greatly increased as a result of the attacks in the
United States on September 11. The heightened security will affect all
international students, scholars, faculty and staff who have travel plans
that involve reentry into the U.S. There will also be more difficulties in
obtaining entry visa stamps at U.S. consulates/embassies.

When directives from the U.S. government regarding visa applications and
reentry are issued, ISSS will pass the information on to our international
population.

1. ISSS advises you not to travel if it is possible for you to delay your
travel plans.

2. Risk of visa denials is heightened. Individuals who feel they are at
greater risk of denial should avoid departure from the U.S.

3. It will become more difficult to obtain an entry visa stamp from a US
consulate/embassy located in a country other than the applicants home country.

4. The US inspection process for those reentering the U.S. will involve
closer scrutiny of visa documents.

a. Students reentering should be prepared to present transcripts from all
schools they have attended in the U.S. to document their history as
full-time students and current enrollment. Students who have filed
Exception from a Full Course of Study forms should carry copies of those
Exception forms.
b. Students must be prepared to discuss their degree objectives
intelligently. Faculty and scholars may be asked about the nature of their
responsibility at the University.
c. Individuals must be certain they have valid reentry documents
safeguard these documents to avoid theft or loss.
d. Entry into the U.S. is not guaranteed, even with valid documents. An INS
inspector has the authority to deny entry into the U.S.

5. Individuals who hold dependent visas such as F-2, J-2, H-4 only have a
status when the primary visa holder (F-1, J-1, H-1) is in the United States.
