Got some used textbooks?

Whether you're moving or simply have some extra text books you no longer
need, your books can be donated to AJAR Foundation to help people in
Indonesia gain better access to quality books. AJAR [Indonesia Belajar/
Educating Indonesians, http://www.ajarweb.org ] is a non-profit
organization whose mission is to help improve the quality of Indonesian
education.

The economic crisis that hit Indonesia in 1997 had caused the government to
cut subsidies for public universities, leaving most of them in desperate
needs of funding. University libraries in Indonesia have less collection
than most professors in the United States have in their personal libraries,
and their newest collection of books dated five to ten years back, some
even worse. The "Got Books?" project intends to collect used textbooks and
donate them to university libraries in Indonesia to improve their
collections amidst the economical hardship.

On September 6, 2000 "Got Books?" campaign on electronic mailing lists was
commenced, and to date, thanks to our generous contributors, we have
collected more than 500 textbooks and reference magazines with subjects
ranging from computer science, physics, chemistry, biology, geography, law,
medicine, mathematics, politics, psychology, philosophy,
architecture, business, engineering, sociology and the arts.

The first shipment of books [total 300 text books] has recently been sent
from the port of Los Angeles to the following university libraries:
Universitas Petra Surabaya, Universitas Negeri Surabaya, Institut Teknologi
Surabaya and Universitas Airlangga.
