Yes, Samantha must be confusing the enlarged femora with beetle elytra. Booklice can be both winged and wingless in the adult stage. Barklice (same order) adults are typically winged. Wings are normally held roof-like over the body. Of course, nymphs never have wings. The slender, thread-like antennae plus enlarged clypeus are distinctive for the order. Some species produce silk. Barklice often live in aggregations and are usually found in moist places, such as leaf litter, beneath stones, on vegetation or under tree bark. They feed on algae, lichens, fungi and various plant debris, and also pollen.
