It appears to be a ground beetle (Carabidae). An occasional but accidental invader.

Does anyone have an idea about what the large black insect might be? I haven't managed to match it to any of the reference images. It's about 12 mm long, not counting appendages. I find one every two weeks in the traps by the exterior doors, so I think they're coming in from outside. We're in western Washington (the rainy part), right on Puget Sound.
