Hello colleagues,

We are working on protocols for quarantining procedures for new acquisitions of
library and archival material. The aim is to deal with new acquisitions
efficiently, making them available in a period of weeks, where possible. To do
this, we are taking a risk based approach to quarantining and would welcome
your comments on how we deal with potential pests.

On arrival, all collections will go to a temporary holding area/quarantine
space (this is all we have available currently). Where possible,
items/collections will be risk assessed prior to arrival.

-Low risk material (i.e. from a known, 'clean' source) will be spot checked
during temporary re-boxing operations and the original packaging disposed of;
it will then go to the store to await cataloguing/re-packaging.

-High risk material (e.g. items known to come from a poor environment) will
undergo detailed inspection immediately; the packaging will be thrown away and
they'll be re-boxed temporarily. If there are signs of insect activity they
will be bagged and sealed with white paper and a sticky trap; they'll be
checked periodically and live pests treated or they'll be cleaned and sent to
store.

-Collections where no information on the source/condition is available will be
spot checked immediately, risk assessed on that basis and the protocols above
followed accordingly.

Firstly, does this seem like an appropriate framework? How long should we leave
material sealed in bags if evidence of pest activity is found (we have found
varying timescales from less than two weeks up to two months) or does it depend
on the material and what kind of pests we expect to find therefore?

Many thanks for your replies.

Kind regards,

Sharon Connell
