You are correct there Malcolm.  I use only Media Monkey now and have
bought the lifetime license (as it was in Dollars).  I haven't
configured it yet to play video directly from it but there are several
addons / plugins that should work for it.  The later version also allows
you to link Media Monkey & Last.fm so that your profile is kept up to
date.  A very good Windows app that supports almost all MP3's out there
(including the iPods).

Homer moment (DOH!!). Media Monkey does MP3 conversion too - I can rip
CDs and convert pretty much anything to MP3. Forget iTunes!
