For the benefit of those who were not there last night...
First: Thank you to Andy and (insert name of other teacher whose name I have unfortunately forgotten) for your hospitality, and apologies for staying longer than we should, I hope that hasn't put you off inviting us back.
It was pleasing to see the working Edubuntu configuration all working before we got there - a good sign that in terms of usability Linux is progressing well.
Aside from looking at some infrastructure issues (cabling, switches, etc) the main "task" we set ourselves, and largely failed at, was working out why the old RM boxes would not connect to the Edubuntu terminal server. Actually we did confirm what the problem is (the hardware is not capable of running at 1024x768 at 32bit colour, the boot image served by the Edubuntu server sets that as a minimum), we did not succeed (yet!) in convincing the server to send an alternate configuration (24-bit colour). Any knowledgable LTSP experts who can advise on this should raise their hands now!
Phil and Malcolm have taken some hardware away to play with so hopefully they'll have some luck. Phil has the advantage of having a working Edubuntu server to play with already so we'll be expecting an answer from Phil sometime this afternoon :-)
Sad techies that we are we stayed until after 10pm working on this, so I hope we can be forgiven if we outstayed our welcome a little - I think everyone needed to get home by (before!) that point. On the other hand I think we're now confident what the problem is and hopefully can solve it; this means that a large number of "spare" machines instantly become available. I'd personally like to try with Edubuntu 8.04 as I think 8.04 does seem generally better than 7.10 at dropping down to lower resolutions when a higher one fails.
Anyway thanks again to Andy and others at the school (especially for the apple pies and doughnuts!), and to the PLUG members who attended.
