Usually those directories contain multiple versions of the linux distribution.  
The safest route would be to find the most recent version that contains 
i686/i386 and not the x86_64 .iso version.  You will most likely want 
something like a desktop edition and not the alternative edition or server 
edition.

If you give us the name of the Linux distribution that you would like, we can
