I did a Wubi install from a USB stick (wubi.exe plus the Ubuntu 8.10
iso) onto a Vista machine, taking up a mere 15 GB of the massively
oversized hard drive ;-)

The booting is handled by Vista's boot manager, presenting Windows Vista
and Ubuntu as two options on boot, with Vista the default.

I couldn't find the Windows partition for a while, though I did mount
the laptop's recovery partition OK. Then I spotted that it is
automatically part of the file system as /host so no need to do anything
to access the Windows directories apart from exploring /host and its
subdirectories.
