Hi all, You might be interested to note that I did get Windows 7 running on the laptop and I'm impressed so far.
Impressed??? With Windows ?? Well, I came from Acorn (BBC and Archimedes) through Win 3, 3.1, 3.11, 95, 98, 2000, and XP. None as good as Apple or Acorn but by force of the public thinking that industry standard must be ideal for young children (where is the logic in that !!!?) I had to go the Microsoft route. And they have grown to a pretty competent OS in XP. Then I got Vista and hated it. In fairness I didn't give it a fair trial. It's on a laptop and every time I tried to do anything it was like wading through treacle. Nothing seemed to be intuitive, or as good as XP. So, after one whole evening of playing with W7 I can announce that I find it seems to work smoothly and seems to be as near to a pleasant experience as Windows ever can be. I really must get a Mac and find out what they're like to live with. And so to Linux. I now need to install Ubuntu 9 (thanks Andy) onto the laptop and give it a try. My experience of Linux so far is that I fall over at the first or second thing I try to do but we shall see. I shall post questions here, if I may. Thanks, Andy, Ed, Tony, Stuart, Ben for all your conversations on Tuesday. See you next meeting.
