I did a standard 8.04 install onto a Dell Dimension 6000 laptop, then 
followed the above to add in the netbook style interface.

It worked OK, the only thing not right that I spotted at first is the 
top toolbar of Ubuntu disappeared apart from the network icon (which 
refreshes regular and hence re-appears, as did the clock after 1 minute).

With more use there are clearly issues with the graphics / window layout 
where the "Hardy Heron" wallpaper appears on exiting some apps and 
others (especially those with light backgrounds) seem to overpower the 
dark colours of the launcher through its transparency.

I'll try the distro approach next.
