This sounds really cool.  I have got a 286 laptop in the loft, mono
screen, orange on black.  Would be cool to get linux on that somehow.  I
think it has dos6 and windows 3.0 on it at the moment.

Not sure if there is a distro out there that can run on 286 but it could
be fun finding out!
