I don't see that as a problem (you do have a good excuse anyway). The
problem is more the reverse: that people will be replying, but instead
of hitting "reply" will start a new message. I don't see this as a show
stopper either, given that this is a low traffic group (it would be a
real nuisance on a high traffic group though).

A good email client should help you here: both messages should have the
same message ID so the email client should be able to avoid you seeing
them both. That said, I don't know any that handle this well. Suggestions?

Again, to be clear: it's only replies to messages you send you may get
twice. Eg if I had done a "reply to all" for this message, you'd see my
reply directly to you and again as it went to the list. This would
happen even with the list as it is if I hit "reply to all", although the
change would make it more likely.

This isn't really what this is about. There are standard ways of doing
things, but the PLUG list reverses them, which means that learned
behaviour needs to be changed here. It only really affects people who
use multiple lists (which I do, so I am biased).

Imagine if you visited a website which asked for your password before
your username. You'd probably find yourself entering your username in
the password box and your password (in full view) in the username box.
The problem wasn't that you were careless, it's that the website did
things the opposite way from "the norm". The end result was still that
anyone stood behind you would now know your password.

Put it another way: Suppose I were to personally email you and everyone
else on the list in one message (without using the mailing list, ie
putting all of the addresses into the email manually). If you wanted to
reply to just me, you'd hit reply. If you wanted to reply to everyone,
you'd hit "reply to all". With this mailing list, this behaviour is
reversed, and if it seems natural the way it is it's just because you've
got used to it this way!

I do appreciate your comments and this isn't my decision to make, I just
get to implement it. I will also deal with the majority decision
whichever it is.
