I have used the installation dvd, you can choose your desktop enviroment at 
install time.  I chose gnome.  It is by far the best suse distro since the 9.x 
days.  Just be careful installing nvidia proprietry drivers.  I had a major 
headache with conflict of different versions being installed at the same time.

I  have also played with the live CD from this month's Linux Format and
must say that it does look very good. I'm going to give it a more
thorough test in a virtual machine to make sure I can run all of the
apps I currently use in Ubuntu.
