Dear all,

As you know Petri nets are under an ISO standardisation process which, when it will have been completed, will lead to a set of a three parts standard under the reference ISO/IEC 15909. Today part 1 has reached the status of international standard, while part 2 is a working draft document. Work on part 3 has not started at this time.

In addition, an addendum to part 1 is being developed with the objective to include the class of well-formed nets to the original standard (actually the name of those nets is being changed and the new one has not been definitively chosen). This addendum is a working document too.

Some information (to be updated) on the progress of this work is available at: http://www.informatik.uni-hamburg.de/TGI/PetriNets/standardisation/ .

Recently 2 ballots had occurred concerning the part 2 and the addendum of part 1. May I mention that the following countries did not participated to the last vote, while PN community might be represented in those countries: BE, CH, FI, LX, DK, PT...

According to the ISO/IEC Directives, the process of going to the stage beyond (ie. Committee Draft - CD) requires a "sufficient consensus" of the community. It is up to us to decide what sufficient consensus means. Thus the community should try to reach consensus (100% of the countries where PN community is represented) that we should progress to the next stage at editing or WG19 meetings. That's the objective of the meeting which is organised in Paris on January 4-6.

On the other hand, participation to the national bodies, the only way to officially support the standard, might be difficult as it may require involvement of financial commitments that some of you cannot afford. However, we have found in France an informal agreement with AFNOR (the french standardisation body) for a french participation to the votes free of charge. The only participation to the ballots does not require any travel expenses, it only means to submit votes to the national body representing the country of the participant.

Therefore, we would like to invite those countries which have not participated to the votes yet, to take part to the forthcoming ballots.

We would be very pleased if everyone of the community could be involved in the standardisation process. If you wish further information, do not hesitate to contact J. Billington, E. Kindler or myself.

With my best regards,
