Research
Program on Global Computing
Global computers are computational infrastructures available globally and able to provide uniform services with variable guarantees for communication, co-operation and mobility, resource usage, security policies and mechanisms, etc., with particular regard to exploiting their universal scale and the programmability of their services.
Here the emphasis is on two widely studied global computers, Service Oriented Computing (SOA) and Grid computing. The latter focuses on high performance, heterogeneity and interoperability, fault tolerance and authentication and it is oriented towards scientific computations, data mining and machine learning.
Instead, SOA is based on the notion of service as the main building block of transactional and coordination applications, like those typical of electronic commerce. The most relevant aspects concern open endness, security, the definition and implementation of linguistic constructs for mobility and coordination and the identification of adequate methodologies of software development, themselves seen as services.
While sharing lots of fundamental and application oriented aspects, Grid and SOA have been studied by different scientific communities, which have eventually developed significantly different formalizations. The aim of this research program is to deepen the understanding of the specific aspects of both global computers, but also to take advantage of the theories and methods of computer science for developing general and transversal approaches able to reuse concepts, scientific results and implementations. For instance the aspects concerning Quality of Service (QoS, as opposed to best effort) and Service Level Agreements ( SLA , also for nonfunctional aspects} are central aims of both SOA and Grid.
Among the most relevant Italian and
European projects which the postdoc will have the possibility to
collaborate to, we mention: for SOE, the SENSORIA (Software
Engineering for Service-Oriented Overlay Computers (http://sensoria.fast.de) project of the
IST-FET-GC2 program of the European VI Framework; and, for Grid, the
Grid.it (http://www.grid.it) project of the FIRB program of the
Italian MInistry for Research and the European Network of Excellence
CoreGrid (http://www.coregrid.net), also of the VI
Framework.
