We present an advanced tutorial aiming at celebrating the pioneering
contributions of Carl Adam Petri and Anatol W. Holt, whose theoretical work
on the role of computers in coordinating human activity provides a powerful
conceptual tool in dealing with current widespread use of computers as
communication media. We offer an introduction to the leading themes of the work
of Petri and Holt, hoping to contribute to their rediscovery.
