It is the expanded error checking macro. Fortran does not provide a concise way to do error checking except to use the C preprocessor, but the line length requirements apply to the _expanded_ macro. Fortran is a perpetual nuisance, but once you learn about all the potholes, barbed wire, broken glass, and polonium in the food, it's possible to get by.
