I am using the fenics library for my PDE discretization. I can not compile fenics with PETSc 3.10.3. I will locate the exact error tomorrow.

Regarding the event, it seems there are scenarios where something important changes in the model and a conservative time step is desirable, and other scenarios where the dynamics after the event are on the same scale as before so it makes sense to continue with the same step sizes.
