It doesn't make sense to use MatMult in this way. The granulatory is too small and the performance will suck. Just convert your program to use PETSc sequentially; get it debugged and optimized for your problem family. Then and only then come back to us and ask how to add boilerplate to do some things in parallel. (of course you can ask questions about converting your program to use PETSc anytime). Reason: making it parallel in the way you desire is completely orthogonal to getting it working with PETSc so you put off all those issues until it works well with PETSc. There is NO advantage in trying to get it working with PETSc and simultaneously parallel in the way you describe it will just be much harder for you to understand, write and debug. Honestly it will be a nightware doing it all at once.
