Thanks. Actually I am not specifying the backend as 'localhost', though one of 
the backends resolves to localhost. The only localhost referred to in the conf 
file is system_db_hostname. Also I tried this with three seperate machines, one 
running pgpool only, another as backend0 alive at pgpool start time, and 
another as backend1 which i tried to add. Got the same result.

Any other suggestions? Why would it try to do localhost in the add scenario but 
the correct host in the recover a degenerated node scenario given the exact 
same configuration and command?
