I trying to install postgresql-6.4.2 on an Intel FreeBSD 3.0 box.

The compile seems to work well. I got:
All of PostgreSQL is successfully made. Ready to install.

The install worked, I think?! I got:
Thank you for choosing PostgreSQL, the most advanced ... engine.

instead of:
        gmake[1]: Leaving directory '/usr/src/pgsql/src/man'

as the INSTALL doc says.

A careful check of the compile and install log files didn't show anything
funny.

The regression test however fails miserably. Witness:

Backend aborted and dumped core in several of the tests

many, many outright errors (not just off in the 4th digit)

I have installed an older version of postgreSQl on a DEC alpha
box and didn't see anything like I am seeing now.

I have tried to follow the install doc very carefully but with the
amazing stuff I am seeing I must be making some fundamental mistake.

BTW after removing the pgsql tree and reloading from the tar file, then
rebuilding I have proved that I can make the same mistake repeatedly.

Any words of wisdom from the gurus?!
