Hi,
I'm the database administrator here for a postgresql
installation. I have had several database applications
running with no problems but I have run into a
severe problems with a client's application which
we are hosting.
We used postgresql 6.4.2 under a RH 6.0 like environment.
I don't know what exactly their application is doing, but
what happened is this : Frequently, no query would complete
on a table because it was locked. So far this is nothing
new, but what is peculiar is that after some times the
disk partition under which the database is fills up to 100%.
If I look into the database directory, I find several files
pg_pgsort.XXXX and two or three eating all the space > 2.5Gigs.
Now, I updated the database installation to the last 6.5 release,
hoping that it would fixed the bugs but no. The same thing
happen except now that other query to the used-to-be-locked table
now complete (thanks to the new MVCC!) Also it is now pg_temp.XXXXX
files which are eating all the space.
This is what I know from the client web application. They are
using Perl/DBI. Their code is messy. There are problems
with their SQL. ( I see parse errors in the logs and things
like that) They are not using transaction.
Now, is this a known problems ? What can be causing this ? Where
do I start to investigate ?
Thanks for your help.
