I recently bought a copy of applix, and I've been really impressed by it. It contains a "Access" like application that will talk to an ODBC database. It is a little less-than-obvious how to connect a UN*X ODBC application to a UN*X ODBC database. I have successfully connected Windoze ODBC apps like access to PostgreSQL, but I don't know exactly where to proceed here.
