The problem was solved by doing a "make install" followed by "make check"

The sequence was:

./configure --without-readline

make

make check

C compiler was gcc

$uname -a
HP-UX name B.11.11 U 9000/778 2013026443 unlimited-user license

$ gcc -v
Reading specs from /usr/local/lib/gcc-lib/hppa1.1-hp-hpux11.00/2.9-hppa-991112/specs
gcc version 2.9-hppa-991112
