Then I think the validating function someone else sent here (<http://www.databasejournal.com/img/email_val.sql>) is a good start. You probably want the opposite behaviour -- emailinvalidate(), I guess -- but that seems like a good "obviously wrong" tester. It might not be fast, though -- that loop at the special character check looks pretty painful.
