It would be a delight to be able to use more advanced (IMHO) Perl- compatible regexes in PostgreSQL. Perhaps a global configuration variable to select which regex engine to use would help work around any backward compatibility problems? Or, somewhat uglier, a different syntax in SQL for the new regex engine?
