Is this when you're replying to a post or creating a new post? If the former, and you're using reply-to-all, you'll be sending one message to the list and another directly to the poster of the message you're responding to.

Thanks to both for your answers.  But no -- It's for new posts.  In fact, when writing the email 
that started this thread, it was only to pgsql-performance@postgresql.org (I double-checked by 
using emacs on my Thunderbird "Sent" folder), yet I still got another 
"undeliverable" reply along with your message:

   This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification.
   Delivery to the following recipients failed.
      [EMAIL PROTECTED]
