FWIW, I've used the following ~/.cvsrc for many years:

cvs -z3
update -d -P
checkout -P

The usefulness of -z3 depends on the speed of your connection, but
the other two lines fix obviously stupid defaults ...

Heh, most of the people I know who use Subversion made the switch just because of the need for those two lines. (Of course, repository- wide versioning another common reason.)
