to speed things up , cache the result:

        athensCanvas pathTransform restoreAfter: [

paint := ( canvas cacheAt: self form
    ifAbsetPut: [ (self form asAthensPaintOn: canvas) ]).

athensCanvas setPaint: paint.

(and before saying draw, you have to set shape first, isn't?)
athensCanvas setShape: ....

                athensCanvas draw ]
