I am working on a 13inch 1080p laptop, that's fine, even with the larger font (which I am using).
Maybe you want to have things working nicer on 1366x720p screens? Or 1280x800 for old MBPs? That's the cheap laptop rez (I've been cursed with having to work with one for a client).
