hdparm basically bypasses the kernel logic and bitbangs the drive
directly.

the kernel will default to dma on. And will autodetect the 80 ribbon
cable if the chipset supports it, if it doesn't you can manual override
on the kernel commandline with ide0=ata66 etc; if you use hdparm for
this you only tell the drive to go fast but not the kernel...
