I'm not sure whether to bring this up to Red Hat or to id. Q3 worked
perfectly on all our computers in all other Linux distributions. When
we all switched to RH8.0, everything still worked except that my
brother's computer (K6-2-500, 256MB RAM, nVidia GF2 MX200) would, about
every three minutes, go into a fit about ten seconds long. It would
produce about 1 frame every 2 seconds.

Phoebe-3 worked so well that I switched everyone to it. It *seemed*
faster, but running it on an older computer show that it's actually much
slower. The only thing faster is GNOME in a couple places. My computer
shows shadows through walls (giving me a very unfair advantage, hehe),
the computers with nVidia cards crash when changing settings (nVidia
documentation lists this problem, but the proposed solution doesn't
work), my sister's computer has frozen a couple times, my brother's
computer is way slower and has the stalling problem *more* often, and
mine loses mouse control after about a minute.

I also tried booting in "Failsafe", but it doesn't make any difference.
I've searched all over the internet and can't find anyone else having
these sorts of problems. This happens with totally clean RH installs on
a diverse set of computers. The only similarity between them is that
they all have VIA chipsets and AMD chips, but that doesn't affect
anything else.

(I tried a known good ALi board, and X runs on it for about two minutes,
then freezes or panics.)

As for the stalling on my brother's computer, I've tried increasing RAM
to a gig, changing filesystem to Reiser, trying different kernels,
turning off nearly all services, changing all sorts of options in Q3,
running in "failsafe", changing the video card for an ATI, changing the
mouse for USB, changing the sound card to a Crystal PCI, removing the
network module, and enabling and disabling all sorts of stuff in the
BIOS. I'm totally stumped!

As far as I can tell, I've changed practically everything I can change
in this RH installation. I just don't understand why every other
distribution runs it just fine. Frankly, those other distributions
don't do anything else well enough, so I wouldn't mind losing Q3 to keep
RH running.

Q3 works okay in Win95. It has about a three second audio lag, but it
runs smooth and fast.

It seems weird that nobody else (at least as far as I've searched on the
internet) has had any of these problems. My best guess as to why this
could be is that nobody plays games in RH8.1 yet.

(Oh, by the way, I just noticed now that the equalizer in XMMS doesn't
work when playing OGGs. I doubt it's RH's fault, but I thought I'd let
you know anyway.)
