Actually that's not quite the same thing. When you press Ctrl+Shift+<any valid hexadecimal digit> you start using the default input method for inputting arbitrary Unicode codepoints.
Try it: hold down Ctrl+Shift, and type 41. That's hex for 65, which corresponds to the capital "A".
In Xterm on my system, Ctrl+Shift+6 produces the same output as Ctrl+6; perhaps pressing Shift is unnecessary and things will work without it.

Somebody stated something about using the shift key as an escape for the fowled up F10 key, unless you disable it on the keybindings. Maybe the shift key has little effect.
What if you changed the escape key to something like that little key, for the other vendor. It's pretty wortless in Linux anyway.
