Could be https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=86163 which is fixed in rpm-4.2-0.72. You may have to boot from a rescue disk to install the new version though. If you are using rpm2cpio, try unpacking rpm to a temporary directory and run it from that directory. That has worked for me in the past.
