I just thought I would mention that the 'play sample sound' feature on 'firstboot' of 
Red Hat 8.0 is very low volume. It probably doesn't really help you, as no doubt 
you've tested your soundcard elsewhere, but try cranking any volume dial you have 
right to the top and try that.
