I hope it's not really this expensive? Maybe Red Hat should lower the price a bit? How about by at least including a free Basic Service Entitlement with the purchase of each RHELWS license? That would at least knock $60 off the initial investment. But all-in-all I think they need to come down from the $179.00 by at least 50 dollars.
There are no RHN subscriptions for RHEL products but rather RHEN subscriptions.
The price of the annual subscription is the price of the products.
Therefore RHELWS with one year subscription is either
$179 + $179 per year OR $299 the first year, $299 the second year, etc.
but definitely NOT $179 + $60 per year.
This has been stated several places now BUT it is very unclear on the Red Hat site (possible purposely so) and *I* have not seen any statements from Red Hat folks that clarify this issue.
I, personally, am willing to pay more than $60 for the enterprise level BUT $60 to $179 or $299 (or $349) PER YEAR PER SYSTEM/DESKTOP is a real hard to swallow for an errata/update service.
Red Hat seems to be focused only on very large, very rich companies for the enterprise line. IMHO even those folks are going to choke on, for example, $299 per year for every desktop.
All this does beg the question though "What would you be willing to pay ... "
... for initial RH Enterprise ES? associated ongoing RHEN errata/up2date service (ie with current features/limits)?
... for initial RH Enterprise WS? associated ongoing RHEN errata/up2date subscription?
... for RHN subscription for consumer products with lives extended to 18 months?
... for RHN subscription for consumer products with "improvements/extensions"?
We're all (well a lot of us) complaining and saying RedHat doesn't know what we want. Tell them.
I, personally, would probably be able to live with (and be able to "sell" to my clients)
RHEL WS with 3-4 yrs errata/updates initial cost of $100 to $150 (90 day sub) plus $100/yr for RHN/RHEN subscription.
RHEL ES with 3-4 yrs errata/updates, initial cost of $200-$300 (90 day sub), plus $200/yr for RHN/RHEN subscription.
I would be willing to pay somewhat more per year for RHN/RHEN subscriptions if it provide somewhat more ability to keep the systems current. For example, if it provided updated, RH "approved", versions of major RH supplied apps like Mozilla, Gnome, KDE, etc.
I would also like to see an option for a "site" fee wherein I could pay a larger subscription which allowed me to setup a local up2date repository for all that sites desktops (ie RHEL WS systems).
What do others want?
