More likely just trying to avoid the anti-Irish attitudes of the time. 
Seems to have been quite bad around New York especially.  My mom has a sign 
from back then that has "WORKERS NEEDED - Irish Need Not Apply" in lovely 
block print.  (We're all Irish except my dad.)
