Hi John,

I sent the seller a message and a link to the "Crapophone" website. He sent me
a message saying he added an amendment to the listing. I checked it and here it
is:
On Aug-17-10 at 07:36:36 PDT, seller added the following information:

Note: I have received conflicting ideas regarding the authenticity of this
item. It is possible that some parts have been replaced, or that it is a
reproduction. I recommend all buyers to look closely at the pictures.

He added this, in small print, below the very large description. That being
said, I found a bunch of the same thing with prices ranging from $100-250 for
"Authentic, Antique" Gramophone/Phonograph/Crapophones. This stuff is ruining
eBay...

Several months ago, I watched two or three listings of needle tins that
included small collections of very rare tins from a seller in Hamburg, Germany.
Each one was snapped up at the last minute by the same bidder. I finally
decided to bid on a new listing of approx. 70 tins, some very rare along with
original advertising. The pictures were slightly hazy, but you could recognize
the rare tins when you enlarged the pics. The bids were quite low and assuming
the same bidder would snipe it at the end, I put in an extra generous bid, but
still within reason for what was represented. I won the auction and the
previous bidder on the other auctions, drove my bid to the max. When I finally
got them, they were cleverly crafted forgeries that I paid 200 euros for. I
wrote the seller and asked him what he thought he was doing. He admitted that
they were fakes, but said he disclosed it in small print (in German). I went
back and looked at all of his previous auctions and no disclosure, b
ut on this particular one he added an additional word in front of authentic.
Thankfully, I paid with PayPal and after investigating, they paid me back.
Lesson learned...

Curt
