You don't have to put in a new cartridge, you can take a crystal cartridge apart, throw out the Rochelle salt crystal and put in a "modern" crystal from a 50s-6-s era crystal cartridge. I've done it successfully several times. The only alteration to the old cartridge is that you might have to use tiny nuts and bolts to put it back together if you can't get the right rivets.
