I got the same stacktrace using php 5.2.2 compiled with --with-sybase
and triing to connect a Sybase database .

A couple of things to try.
1) Compile php using --with-mssql instead of --with-sybase. This will
give you all the mssql_functions and you will be using the mssql
extension and not the sybase extension.
2) Get the latest version of freeTDS.
