The make install problem has been fixed in CVS.
Does the solution Marko suggested in previous comment work?

Well, -liconv is missing from that link line, and according
to your previous error, it was missing earlier as well.
Linking with g++ seemed to solve all the C++ -related
problems.
So, try to configure again with --with-iconv=/usr/local
(but without specifying CC=g++ or anything). Then compile,
and again replace gcc with g++ on the last link line.

I did yesterday morning as one of several attempts. Sorry, I should
have reported it here. That causes the make install to fail. I did
report the make install problem on the 17th. That was a result of the
iconv option.
